Your air filter is one of the most important—and often overlooked—components of your HVAC system. A clean filter keeps your home comfortable, improves air quality, and helps your system run efficiently. But how often should you actually change it?
The Short Answer
Most homeowners should change their air filter every 1-3 months. However, the exact timing depends on several factors specific to your home and lifestyle.
Factors That Affect Filter Life
1. Filter Type
Not all filters are created equal:
- Fiberglass filters (1" thick): Replace every 30 days
- Pleated filters (1" thick): Replace every 60-90 days
- High-efficiency filters (4-5" thick): Replace every 6-12 months
2. Pets in the Home
If you have furry friends, expect to change your filter more frequently. Pet dander and hair clog filters faster:
- No pets: Change every 90 days
- 1 pet: Change every 60 days
- Multiple pets: Change every 30 days
3. Allergies or Respiratory Conditions
If anyone in your household has allergies, asthma, or other respiratory conditions, consider changing your filter every 30-45 days. A clean filter does a better job trapping allergens like pollen, dust mites, and mold spores.
4. Home Size and Occupancy
Larger homes and homes with more occupants generate more dust and particles. A single person in a small apartment can go 90 days, while a family of five in a large home might need to change every 30 days.
5. HVAC Usage
During peak seasons (hot summers and cold winters in the Joliet area), your system runs more, pushing more air through the filter. You may need to change filters monthly during these times.
Pro Tip
Check your filter every month. Hold it up to the light—if you can't see light through it, it's time to replace it regardless of how long it's been installed.
Why Changing Your Filter Matters
Better Air Quality
A dirty filter can't trap new particles, allowing dust, allergens, and pollutants to circulate through your home. This is especially problematic for allergy sufferers and those with respiratory conditions.
Lower Energy Bills
When your filter is clogged, your HVAC system has to work harder to push air through. This extra effort uses more energy, raising your utility bills by as much as 15%.
Fewer Repairs
A dirty filter puts strain on your system, leading to premature wear on components like the blower motor. Many of the service calls we receive in Joliet and Naperville could have been prevented with regular filter changes.
Longer System Life
An HVAC system that doesn't have to work as hard will last longer. Considering a new furnace or AC costs thousands of dollars, a $10-20 filter is a worthwhile investment.
Choosing the Right Filter
Filters are rated by their MERV rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value), which ranges from 1 to 16:
- MERV 1-4: Basic filtration (fiberglass filters)
- MERV 5-8: Good for most homes (pleated filters)
- MERV 9-12: Better air quality, good for allergies
- MERV 13-16: Hospital-grade, may restrict airflow in residential systems
For most Joliet-area homes, we recommend MERV 8-11 filters. They provide excellent filtration without restricting airflow to your system.
Warning
Using a filter with too high a MERV rating can actually damage your system by restricting airflow. Always check your system's specifications or ask a professional.
